Berkeley Lab’s Thomas McKone and Agnes Lobscheid, working with UC Berkeley’s Arpad Horvath under a grant from the Energy Biosciences Institute (EBI), have produced a "Life Cycle Impact Assessment" to measure the benefits on human health that might result from a switch to biofuels from gasoline. Their study shows that a biofuel eliminating even 10 percent of current gasoline pollutant emissions would have a substantial impact on human health in this country, especially in urban areas. More>
Lab Visitors: Staff From Committee on Science and TechnologyStaff from the U.S. House of Representative’s Committee on Science and Technology visited the Lab on Wednesday to learn more about the research that takes place here. The group received briefings on buildings energy efficiency, carbon capture and storage, battery technology, and the BELLA accelerator, among other topics. They also toured various facilities, including the Molecular Foundry, the Windows Testing Facility, and the Joint BioEnergy Institute. Their visit was organized by the Lab’s Government Affairs Department.
KTVU’s chief science correspondent John Fowler included a post in his "Side Effects" blog on the work of Berkeley Lab life scientist and associate Lab Director Joe Gray, who recently received a $16.5 million grant for breast cancer research. "He is a quick-smiling bear of a man who started his professional life as a nuclear physicist. It was the death of his father from lung cancer that set him on the path to uncovering the mysteries of cancer cells," writes Fowler. Go here to read the full post.
Focus Group: Free Lunch for Participants in Internal Communications Discussion A free lunch will be offered to staff selected to participate in one of two focus groups on internal communications at the Lab, to be held Thursday and Friday, June 4 and 5, from noon to 1:30 p.m. To be considered, e-mail your division name, job title or description, and number of years at the Lab. Be sure to include "focus group" in the subject line. Staff from both science and operations areas are encouraged to apply. Selected participants will be notified by Tuesday morning.
Beginning Monday and continuing through early August, UC Berkeley will be conducting electrical work from Centennial Road and Rim Way through the Strawberry Gate and down Lawrence Road. The work will approximately track the Orange Shuttle Bus line. Traffic will be reduced to one lane at intermittent times. UC Berkeley will provide flaggers. Expect delays in biking, driving and taking the shuttle bus and use caution when traversing this area.

When a consulting or employment agreement is offered to an employee, the text of the proposed consulting or employment agreement must be reviewed and approved by the Technology Transfer Department before execution of the agreement by the employee. Under the terms of the University/Department of Energy Contract, the agreement must include specific language concerning University of California property and patent rights in order to obtain Laboratory approval. That language can be found here. Questions on inventions and patent articles in a proposed consulting agreement should be directed to the Technology Transfer Department.
