The Lab's Center for Science and Engineering Education (CSEE) is gearing up for summer with a request for volunteers to serve as Lab mentors for CSEE's high school student and teacher programs. Mentoring is a rewarding way to give back to the community and to inspire future scientists and engineers. Scientists and engineers who are interested in working with students or teachers should e-mail [email protected] or call x5511. The last wave of placements for internship programs are being decided now, so the deadline to become a mentor is approaching fast. For more information about mentoring at the Lab go here.

To help, researchers are developing a range of approaches, such as energy meters, sensors and use of laptops in cubicles. But technology alone won't get most new buildings to "net zero" energy use anytime soon, says Stephen Selkowitz, head of the Building Technologies Department at Berkeley Lab. More>
