H1N1 Influenza Outbreak
What Employees Should Do:
Continue to practice good hygiene steps, including:
- Frequent washing of hands with soap and water
- Use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer e.g., Purell
• Stay at home at first signs of an influenza-like illness, such as:
- Fever above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 Celsius)
- Cough and/or sore throat
• Remain at home for seven days from onset of illness or until you are fever-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer.
• All cases of influenza-like illness in employees and immediate family members should be reported to Health Services (510-486-6266).
• Supervisors who send an employee home for influenza-like illness must notify Health Services.
• Employees returning to work following influenza-like illness or from travel to an affected country (currently Mexico) must be cleared through Health Services.

What the Laboratory is doing:
• We are working with public health officials and following their recommendations.
• We have convened our Pandemic Response Team.
• We are initiating screenings of Laboratory employees who have been out ill or have recently returned from Mexico.
• We are planning next steps should the situation get worse.
