The Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator, or BELLA, will receive $20 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, $2 million of which has arrived. With a total budget of about $28 million, BELLA is expected to generate approximately 50 jobs. When completed in about four years, BELLA, led by Wim Leemans (pictured), will demonstrate the promise of a novel and compact method of accelerating high-energy particles, by making use of a series of synchronized laser systems. Public Affairs: Join PAL to Help Improve Communication Between Lab, EmployeesIn order for Lab communications to work best, information must flow in two directions: from employees and to employees. To help facilitate this exchange, the Public Affairs Liaison (PAL) program has been created. Those who join the program will be asked to provide feedback on ideas and initiatives Public Affairs is formulating, including social networking objectives. And members can share news from their divisions, departments, and groups with Public Affairs for possible posting in Today at Berkeley Lab or the homepage. EH&S: Division Launches New, Improved WebsiteEH&S Division has updated their website, featuring a new, cleaner look that is easier to navigate and includes well-defined links to important resources, such as training, news, and emergency contacts. Glaser Road will be shut down tomorrow to accommodate crane operations for Building 77. Vehicle and pedestrian access will be restricted, as well as interior access to the west end of the building and east end of 77A. Those traversing this area should follow flagger instructions and stay beyond barricaded areas.
Also, to accommodate drilling near Building 53 this weekend, adjacent parking spots will be blocked off, the road leading to the N2 parking lot will be closed, and traffic will be occasionally delayed tomorrow and Sunday.
