As part of the Lab’s Emergency Preparedness Week, a "Drop, Cover and Hold-On" earthquake drill will take place today at 10 a.m. Using the Lab’s public address system, the Emergency Services Team will provide instructions for completing the drill and evacuating buildings. When the drill begins, employees should DROP to the ground, take COVER by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture, and HOLD ON. The exercise will take about 15 to 20 minutes. Special Event: Earth Sciences Lecture on Pyrochlore This FridayRod Ewing, with the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Michigan, will present the Earth Sciences Division’s next Distinguished Scientist lecture. He will discuss "Pyrochlore: The Elegant Response of a Simple Structure to Extreme Conditions of Irradiation and Pressure" at 10:30 a.m. in the Building 66 Auditorium.
Researchers and administrators who want to learn more about export control regulations, and avoid possible civil or criminal liability due to lack of compliance, are invited to a talk by Donald Fischer, an expert in this area. Two sessions will be held on Wednesday, June 17, in Perseverance Hall (Bldg. 54-130), one from 10:30 a.m. to noon and the other from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Training in this area is critical due to strict enforcement by the U.S. government. EH&S 339 Asbestos Awareness Training is for personnel who routinely engage in activities that may contact, but do not disturb, asbestos-containing building materials. This includes facility division crafts employees, construction managers and project managers, and personnel involved in research activities that involve the collection and/or use of asbestos. The Lab has new outgoing e-mail settings. Those who send e-mail from offsite, such as home, on travel, or use the Lab’s wireless network, must change their e-mail client to use the settings specified here. Note that the Lab’s wireless network is considered offsite, so those who use a laptop on this network need to make this change as well. These settings work at the Lab and offsite. To avoid disruption in sending e-mail, changes must be made by Wednesday, June 17.
To accommodate the badging of the numerous students and teachers visiting the Lab this summer, the Site Access Badge office will be closed tomorrow, as well as Monday and Thursday of the following week (June 15 and 18), from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. For questions or concerns, contact Sam Houston (x4855 or x4551).
Wellness: June is National Safety Month The Health Care Facilitator wants to remind employees that June is "National Safety Month." One of the most common work injuries is a fall. Identifying risks and injury-prevention measures are the first steps in reducing or eliminating fall hazards. To help keep yourself and co-workers safe, be sure to wear sensible footwear, keep hallways and workspaces clutter-free, clean up spills immediately, and maintain good lighting. Most falls are preventable, so take precautions to reduce your risk.
