University of California President Mark Yudof came to the Lab yesterday to speak to members of the Council of UC Staff Assemblies (CUCSA) who were meeting here. The council is comprised of representatives from the various UC campuses and Berkeley Lab. Yudof (left) discussed the university’s budget issues, then lunched with the members and answered questions. Interim Lab Director Paul Alivisatos (right) provided an official welcome and afterwards he and Yudof met with the Lab Advisory Board, a panel of leaders from a broad range of fields who provide input on the Lab’s programs and operations.
Many scientists worry that future accelerators built with
today’s technology may simply be unaffordable. Thus, members of the LOASIS program at Berkeley Lab are collaborating with analytics and visualization experts from the Computational Research Division and the National Energy Research Scientific Computing to gain a better understanding of the fundamental physics driving the Laser Plasma Accelerator, machines that can be compact enough to sit on a tabletop and produce accelerating electric fields up to 10,000 times greater than conventional accelerators. Education Outreach: Mentors Needed for High School Student Interns The Center for Science and Engineering Education is looking to place three additional students from its Berkeley Lab Internships for Pre-collegiate Scholars (BLIPS) Program into lab assignments. The program dates are June 17 through August 7. Some funding is available. If you are interested in being a mentor, contact Joe Crippen (x5816).
In The News: Exploring the Fate of Ocean Carbon [Oceanography] The June issue of the oceanographic society’s magazine commemorates the National Oceanographic Partnership Program, which supported the development of the autonomous Carbon Explorer floats engineered by Jim Bishop and colleagues in the Earth Sciences Division. In the magazine Bishop describes how the Explorers have made it possible to track carbon particles to "full ocean depth" around the world and around the clock, reporting the data and receiving instructions by satellite at far less than the cost of shipboard research. Roy Kaltschmidt provided the spectacular photos of the floats.
