Joe Gray — Associated Lab Director for Life and Environmental Sciences — has been elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Gray was recognized for “developing chromosome sorting, bi-variate cell cycle analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization, competitive genomic hybridization, cancer specific markers.” AIMBE was founded in 1991 to establish a clear and comprehensive identity for the field of medical and biological engineering, which is the bridge between the principles of engineering science and practice, and the problems and issues of biological and medical science and practice. The Lab’s Emergency Services Program recently completed its first Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training series with a drill testing organizational skills, damage assessment, building searches, first aid and triage. The training includes three two-hour classes and the next series begins Tuesday, Jan. 5. Registration is required (EHS0511, 0512, 0513). [Science Magazine] Nothing rouses a research community like a threat to its funding, as could be seen recently in Japan after a task force recommended deep cuts in the Ministry of Education's budget for fiscal year 2010. Grass-roots efforts have sprung up to defend individual projects, while community leaders are asserting the importance of research to Japan's future. Berkeley Lab physicist Hitoshi Murayama started an international e-mail campaign for the World Premier International Research Center Initiative, facing a possible 50-percent funding cut. He says fellow Berkeley Lab physicist George Smoot has promised to personally write to the prime minister. More>
The annual Berkeley Lab craft fair will be held tomorrow from 3:30 to 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. The event, sponsored by the Employee Activities Association, features a variety of handmade goods for sale, such as jewelry, photography, art glass, candles, baked goods, jams and jellies, tamales, hand sewn crafts, hand knitted and crocheted items, and pottery. Berkeley Lab has acquired a license to the Burton Group research website. The site provides extensive research on IT trends, vendors and issues. Starting Thursday, employees will be able to buy Swagelok fluid system components directly from Oakland Valve & Fitting in lieu of submitting requisitions to Procurement. An orientation will be held on Thursday, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Perseverance Hall. All Laboratory employees are invited to attend. Representatives will be on hand to answer questions and demonstrate their website and electronic ordering tools.
Safety: Use Caution When Walking at the Lab Even under optimal conditions, some stairways and walkways at Berkeley Lab pose slip and trip hazards. Now that it is getting dark earlier, the rainy season has started, and fallen leaves and pine needles may accumulate on the ground, there are extra hazards. Staff are reminded to use caution when walking, and that use of stairway handrails is recommended.
