Profiles In Safety:
Lab Riggers Can Do the Heavy Lifting

What does it take to move a three-ton, $27-million electron microscope to the second floor of a national user facility? If you work for Kevin Trigales, Rigging Supervisor of the Facilities Division, you don't make this move without weeks of planning, pre-load calculations, testing, and more planning. Without the planning rigging is subject to a multitude of hazards and risks. To prevent errors and mishaps, Trigales runs a Job Hazards Analysis before beginning a new job to determine what hazards and risks may be involved. More>

microbeJGI: Latest Upate of Integrated Microbial Genomes (IMG) Released

Integrated Microbial Genomes (IMG) serves as a community resource for comparative analysis and annotation of all publicly available genomes from three domains of life in a uniquely integrated context. In addition to the content update (more than one million new genes) and User Interface extensions, a notable new feature is the inclusion of protein expression data from a recent Arthrobacter chlorophenolicus (pictured) study and tools for examining these data. Employee Activities: Silver and Black Win Championship

softballAfter five years in the Lab's annual summer softball league, the Silver and Black team has finally captured their first championship, in dramatic fashion. They came back from a 4-1 deficit in their first playoff game against SUDZ to win 13-6. And in the championship game against Rated X, they were down 4-2 before tying the game in the fifth inning. Then, with the bases loaded, Mayra Rivas (ALS) hit a base-clearing double to put the team on top for a final victory of 8 to 5. Congratulations Silver and Black.
