Results from the Human Genome Project are enabling scientists to understand how individual cancers form and progress. This information, when combined with newly developed drugs, can optimize the treatment of individual cancers. Life Sciences Division Director and Associate Lab Director for Life and Environmental Sciences Joe Gray will focus on this approach, its promise, and its current roadblocks — particularly with regard to breast cancer. The event takes place today at noon in the Building 66 Auditorium. Summer Lectures are geared towards lay audiences, so all Lab staff can enjoy them. Today's lecture is the last in the series.
The Center for Science and Engineering Education (CSEE) will host a poster session from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. tomorrow in the cafeteria. Featuring the work of 50 teachers and high school students, this event is one of the rare opportunities to bring together, at one time, examples of the breadth of research conducted at the Laboratory through the experience of the teachers and students who have been here this summer participating in CSEE mentored internship programs. All Laboratory employees and guests are invited. Refreshments will be served.
The Changjiang Scholars program, sponsored by China’s Ministry of Education and the Li Ka Shing Foundation, has named Derun Li of the Accelerator and Fusion Research Division (AFRD) a Lecture Professor at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, China’s leading university. An expert in high-gradient radio-frequency accelerator structures, Li serves as liaison to China for Berkeley Lab’s General Sciences Directorate, which has involved helping design the beam control system for the Shanghai Synchrotron Light Source and membership in last year’s meeting on cooperation in high-energy physics with China, and among other projects. [Greentech Media] Moving away from fossil fuels will only take four things: time, money, technological advances and a calibrated judgment about what projects should be pursued. "The commonly invoked silver bullet is the wrong way to look at it. We have limited time and limited resources," said Steve Koonin, undersecretary for science for the Department of Energy. "We cannot let 1,000 flowers bloom indiscriminately." Koonin (on right with Steve Chu) served in various positions at Caltech for decades before becoming the chief scientist at oil giant BP. While at BP, he was one of the key figures in creating the $500 million biofuel research institute between BP, UC Berkeley, Berkeley Lab and the University of Illinois. More>
