David Attwood and Jeffrey Bokor share an interest in the extreme-the ultrafine, the ultrafast, the ultrashort-a myriad of phenomena in a new world of science at the leading edge of the possible. At Bell Labs in New Jersey, Bokor was head of Laser Science Research and later of Ultra Large Scale Integrated Circuit Technology Research; he came to Berkeley in 1993. Ten years earlier, Attwood had founded the Center for X-Ray Optics at Berkeley Lab for the purpose of studying the science and technology of electromagnetics at extremely short wavelengths.
