Increase Proportion
Of Renewable Energy

This opinion piece, by Berkeley Lab materials scientist Eicke Weber, appeared in Wednesday’s San Francisco Chronicle.

Weber

We need to drastically change our energy mix, relying far more on renewable energy. If we can make this shift, we might avoid the most disastrous effects of global climate change. Increasing energy efficiency and avoiding waste is, without doubt, where we must begin.  In addition, we urgently need to increase the proportion of renewable energies in our energy mix. Among those, direct solar energy harvested as solar thermal energy and through photovoltaic energy conversion are the most promising. Full story.

Lab’s Gray to Speak
At Breast Cancer Event

Gray
Associate Laboratory Director Joe Gray is among the featured speakers at this year’s California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP) symposium, its sixth biennial event, in Los Angeles Sept. 7-9. The CBCRP, administered by the University of California, hosts the gathering for researchers, advocates, and the public. Gray will be featured in a plenary session, “New Directions in Breast Cancer Treatment,” on Sept. 8 at the St. Bonaventure Hotel. For more information on the symposium, go here.
IN MEMORIAM

Genome Pioneer, Lab
Guest Passes Away

Mortimer

Robert Mortimer, a career Berkeley professor considered the father of the study of the yeast Saccharomyces ceerevisiae, passed away on Aug. 10. He started work in this field when asked by his UC Berkeley Ph.D. advisor Cornelius Tobias to prove that the number of chromosomes a cell had determined its resistance to radiation. Mortimer proved him wrong and spent the rest of his career working on yeast genetics. Mortimer was officially hired by Berkeley Lab as a faculty biophysicist in 1991 and retired in 1995, but served as a longtime guest prior to his hire and after his retirement. Go here to read a full obituary. Go here to read an article Mortimer wrote on his efforts to develop the yeast genetic map.

Labor Day Notes: Café
Hours, Computer Use

The Lab will be closed on Monday to observe the Labor Day holiday. Because many employees are taking today off for vacation, the coffee bar in the cafeteria will close at 2 p.m. Also, employees are encouraged to shut down or unplug their computers over the long weekend, when they are most susceptible to cyber attacks. Those who must leave their computers on should ensure their systems have the latest security patches.
