ESnet and Internet2 Networks Partner

The Department of Energy's Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) and Internet2 — two of the nation's leading networking organizations dedicated to research — yesterday announced a partnership to deploy a highly reliable, high capacity nationwide network that will greatly enhance the capabilities of those who participate in DOE scientific research efforts. The partnership brings together two advanced networks, which have a combined 30 years of experience in providing network support to thousands of researchers around the world. Holds Tournament


Berkeley Lab's tennis club will hold its 7th annual tournament next Wednesday and Thursday, from 5 to 7 p.m., on the campus's Hearst Courts, located near Bancroft Ave. and Bowditch St. All levels are invited to play, singles or doubles. Tickets on Sale


Employees can purchase discount tickets to local amusement parks today in the cafeteria. Marine World tickets for Sept. 23 and 24 are on sale for $20, as well as any-day tickets for $24. Water World tickets for Sept. 16 and 17 are available for $15; any-day tickets for $18. Great America tickets for the weekends only can be bought online using the password BERKLABS.

Reminder: Bay Bridge Closed This Weekend

Employees are reminded that Monday is the Labor Day holiday, and the Lab will be closed. They should also be aware that the Bay Bridge's eastbound lanes will be closed Saturday through Monday for construction. BART trains will be running overnight on Saturday and Sunday.

Closing In On Sudden
Oak Death Syndrome


Sudden Oak Death
By comparing the complete genome sequences of two plant-killing pathogens and related organisms, researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (DOE JGI), in collaboration with the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) and others, have uncovered crucial aspects of the disease-causing mechanisms of "Sudden Oak Death" (SOD) and soybean root rot disease. The Tech Museum Awards website currently includes a front-page feature on Ashok Gadgil, with Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division, and his water purification system that has aided more than 200,000 people in developing countries. The Tech Museum presented Gadgil with its Agilent Technologies Foundation Health Award in 2004. Go here to view the website.
