A New Imaging Method
ID's Cancer Cells Early

Knowles

Fluorescence that illuminates a specific protein within a cell's nucleus may be a key to identifying cancer virulence and to developing individualized treatment, according to Berkeley Lab life scientist David Knowles and researchers at Purdue University. The scientists created a technique that automatically locates and maps proteins involved in regulating cell behavior. The results have for the first time made it possible to verify the distinction between multiplying cells that are harmless and those that are malignant. Full story.

Director Will Testify
At 'ARPA-E' Hearing

Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu is scheduled to testify tomorrow in Washington at a Congressional hearing on "ARPA-E," the Advanced Research Projects Agency on Energy that some have proposed should be established within the Department of Energy. Chu was a member of the National Academy of Sciences committee that proposed ARPA-E as one of the suggested options in a report on American competitiveness. The hearing before the House Committee on Science, featuring five academic and industry leaders, will be webcast beginning at 7 a.m. Pacific time. Go here for instructions (RealPlayer 7.0 is required).

EH&S Division Launches
Safety Slide Website

The EH&S Division has launched a website that features "1 Minute 4 Safety" slides, which are designed to assist Berkeley Lab supervisors and managers in conducting safety discussions with their staff. The slides, which are cataloged by EH&S discipline, deliver focused talking points that can be used in any meeting as a one-minute safety opener, or to launch a more extensive safety discussion. EH&S subject matter expert contacts are listed on each slide, and the slides can be downloaded and printed. New slides will be added routinely. Access the slides here. Contact Richard DeBusk at x2976 for more information.
