PEOPLE

Lab Scientists Join
AAAS as Fellows

Falcone
Ramesh
Wemmer

Among the 376 selected for this year's crop of fellows for the American Association for the Advancement of Science are four Berkeley Lab researchers. They include David Wemmer, (Physical Biosciences), Suzannah Lewis (guest in Life Sciences), Roger Falcone (Advanced Light Source), and Ramamoorthy Ramesh (Materials Sciences). Fellows are recognized for the outstanding contributions to their fields. They will be officially inducted next February at a special ceremony during the organization's annual meeting in St. Louis, MO. Go here to see a complete list of AAAS inductees.

ANNNOUNCEMENTS

Give Blood, Save Lives;
Bloodmobile at the Lab

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at Berkeley Lab on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 14, 15 and 16, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside the cafeteria. Go here to make an appointment (click "registration" link, sponsor code is LBL). For questions, contact Clark Wood (x6489), or Heather Pinto (x4181). Health Services is offering inoculations for flu and pneumonia to all Berkeley Lab employees this Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon in Building 26 (Health Services). Call x6266 to make an appointment. Cost is $21 for flu and $35 for pneumonia. Appointments are also available for Thursday, Nov. 10 (same time) in Building 939 for staff who work downtown.
COMPUTER UPDATE

Windows Systems Must
Run Custom Virus Check

All Microsoft Windows systems at Berkeley Lab must run this custom virus check available here. This check is necessary to detect a possible malicious piece of software, which is undetectable by other means. It takes about 1 to 5 minutes to execute, and scan results are sent directly to a central server of the Computer Protection Program (CPP) for analysis. The scan will only run once per computer. For help, contact CPP.

BENEFITS NEWS

SPECIAL EVENTS

Integrated Circuits Focus
Of Interdisciplinary Talk

Berkeley Lab is the DOE Office of Science leader in the design of custom integrated circuits for sophisticated instrumentation. Tomorrow, Engineering's Peter Denes will tell people "How to Design an Integrated Circuit." It's part of the Interdisciplinary Instrumentation Colloquium series and will take place at 4 p.m. in the Building 50 Auditorium. Lab employees are invited. The talk will go through the steps of the IC design process and discuss some of the challenges facing IC design with changing technology. Current activities will also be showcased. Go here for a list of future colloquia.

Deer Killed By Mountain Lion in Old Town Area

A deer was reported killed by a mountain lion at the Lab this past Saturday.  The kill occurred in the Old Town area between Buildings 40, 41 and the Fire House. Lions frequently return to the site of a kill for several days, so staff are asked to exercise caution when walking in this area. Mountain lions are rarely seen at Berkeley Lab, but when they are, this information is posted on the "mountain lion" website.  The site includes information on the most recent sighting and provides tips on what to do if you should encounter one of these animals.
