Engineering Announces
RIFs; Volunteers Sought

Acting Engineering Division Director Kem Robinson has announced that financial constraints have necessitated a Reduction in Force (RIF) process in the division. All hiring activity, promotions and reclassifications have been temporarily frozen. Volunteer resignations will be considered in lieu of layoffs of others, with applications due Jan. 30. Volunteers may be eligible to receive severance pay. Go here to read Robinson’s announcement memo to the Division.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Lau

Computer Brown Bag
Features Cube of Doom

The next Computer Protection Brown Bag event will feature Steve Lau of NERSC speaking on "The Spinning Cube of Potential Doom" at noon, next Wednesday, in the Building 50 auditorium. Lau will discuss his work in graphically visualizing malicious traffic on the Internet using network information collected by the Bro intrusion detection system. The "Cube" is useful for monitoring the overall level of continual malicious traffic on the Internet. Bring your lunch and questions.

Armstrong

Betty Armstrong Retirement Party Next Tuesday

After more than thirty years of extraordinary service to Berkeley Lab's Physics Division and the Particle Data Group, Betty Armstrong will retire on January 30. Among her many achievements, Betty is the architect of the 1000-page biennial Review of Particle Physics, the "bible" of the high-energy physics community. A farewell reception will be held next Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Director's Conference Room, 50A-5132. All of Betty's co-workers and friends are welcome to attend.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Molecular Foundry
Ceremony Next Friday

Next Friday, the Lab will celebrate the groundbreaking of the Molecular Foundry, a DOE nanoscience national user facility. Activities will begin with a keynote address at 10:45 a.m. by Larry Bock, Chairman of Nanosys, in the Bldg. 66 Auditorium. Director Shank will then be joined by U.S. Congressman Mike Honda and other dignitaries for a groundbreaking ceremony at 11:30 a.m. below Bldg. 66. Details of the ceremony and other groundbreaking activities may be found here. Because space is very limited, registration is required.
